4 Things You Should Be Doing to Protect Your Hair This Winter

4 WAYS TO PROTECT YOUR HAIR THIS WINTER

If you think the summer air can cause damage to your hair, you should know that winter can be even worse for your tresses. Why? Because the dropping temperatures outside and the blasting of indoor heaters can wreak havoc to your scalp and strands. To figure out the best way to protect your hair from the cold, we spoke to several New York City and Los Angeles-based dermatologists and hair dressers. Simply put, you can’t ignore the weather, and so here’s how you can prepare:

INVEST IN A GOOD SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER

Your shampoo and conditioner are your first layer of protection against cold weather, so you should invest in good ones. Routine Shampoo and Conditioner are specifically formulated to hydrate and nourish your strands, which is particularly important when they are exposed to changing temperatures in the winter. Our products are made with biotin to help strengthen your hair, and nettle oil to help balance and nourish your scalp. In addition, our pH-balanced formula is great for all hair types including color treated hair!

GO EASY ON THE HEAT

Winter temperatures mean you’ll likely be cranking up your heat, both in your home and in the shower.  Heat is a major factor to dry, dull-looking hair, as it strips your hair of its natural moisture. Try to go from taking hot showers to warm ones if you can. Even better, use lukewarm or cold water for the last 10 seconds on your hair. Cold water allows your hair cuticles to close and closed cuticles will result in more moisturized hair. In addition, when the cuticle layer is closed, more light will reflect off the hair, giving your hair more shine and a healthier look!

WASH LESS OFTEN

It’s no fun to have to put on a scarf and jacket each time you go outside, but one of the perks of cooler weather is that your hair tends to get less greasy, which means you can wash it less often. In fact, over washing your hair can lead to dryness. We recommend you wash your hair two to three times a week as necessary, and if you feel like your hair is getting dry, try using conditioner on the days you don’t shampoo.

USE A SERUM

If you find your scalp to be incredibly dry, try using Routine Hair Serum. Our serum is made from ingredients like Rosehip Oil and Jojoba Oil, and is designed to nourish your scalp and balance your scalp microbiome.
