5 GREAT WAYS TO PROTECT YOUR HAIR IN HOT WEATHER

As the weather warms up, we’re all excited to spend a bit more time socializing with others, preferably outdoors. And while the sun may do wonders for our mental health, it can mean trouble for your hair, especially if it is color-treated.

“Your bathing suit is a good analogy,” says a hair expert we asked. “After repeatedly sitting out in the sun and swimming in chlorinated pools, you’ll start to see your bathing suit wear – the material may feel thin, the colors may fade, and the elastic may feel worn.” Similarly, the sun has the same effect on your hair fibers, and can cause weakened, straw-like strands.

So as the weather warms up and your social calendar becomes more full, here are a few tips to help you maintain your best head of hair.

WEAR A HAT

During the summer, the sun is working overtime, beaming down on your head and dehydrating your mane. This results in dryer and more brittle hair, leaving you with more fragile strands that are susceptible to longer term damage. Extreme exposure to sunlight can result in the loss of hair color, vibrancy, and elasticity. This is especially true if you color your hair.

The easiest solution to this is a wide-brimmed hat, which will protect your hair and has the added benefit of protecting your skin too.

RINSE BEFORE YOU DIP

Remember those signs at the local YMCA mandating a pre-pool shower? Well, they were aimed at ensuring you kept the pool clean, but a pre-pool rinse can also keep your hair clean. Your hair is incredibly absorbent, and if you wet your hair in the shower before you jump into the pool, it will absorb less chlorinated water. That will mean less dry, brittle hair!

WASH AFTER YOU SWIM

If you’re staying by the pool all day, you should try to give your hair a quick rinse if you can to remove the chlorine that has built up in your hair.  When you can, you should wash your hair with Routine Wellness Shampoo and Conditioner. Routine Wellness Shampoo will help rinse out any damaging pool chemicals like chlorine, and our conditioner will help restore and hydrate your hair. In fact, we’d encourage you to keep Routine Wellness Conditioner in your hair longer if you can, as pools can dry out your hair and scalp quickly.

GIVE THE TOOLS A REST

Hot and dry summer air already acts as a hairdryer, so try to avoid tools that bring excessive heat to your hair or scalp. We recommend you forgot heat styling tools and hair dryers during the summer, or at least cut down on the time you use them.

FIGHT THE FRIZZ

Moisture and humidity in the air are often the culprits of summer frizz.  Tame your flyaways and fight frizz with Routine Wellness Hair Serum. Our hair serum is lightweight, and packed with amino acids and vitamins that will leave your summer hair feeling extra soft without being weighed-down.
