5 MOST COMMON CAUSES OF DRY HAIR & HOW TO PREVENT THEM
When your skin gets dry, the easy and simple solution is a moisturizing lotion. You can apply it at any time, anywhere, and never think about it again. The same can’t be said for most hair care products, which aren’t designed to be used as frequently or as easily as lotion. After all, you probably can’t apply a hair mask in the middle of your work day at your office.
As a result, the best solution to dry hair is preventing it in the first place, rather than remediating it after you’ve been suffering from it. Below, you’ll find the five most common causes of dry hair, and how to prevent them.
HEATING TOOLS
Do you love blowouts? Do you use your hairdryer at the hottest setting possible? Heat is a major factor in causing dry, dull-looking hair, as it strips your hair of its natural moisture. Don’t use heating tools everyday, particularly during the summer when the hot air can already act as a hair dryer. If you can’t live without the heat, apply a bit of Routine Wellness Hair Serum prior to using your tools. It will add a final dose of hydration and protection before you style.
WRONG PRODUCTS
Using hair care products that are especially drying or not balanced from a pH perspective can also cause your hair to feel brittle. When selecting a shampoo and conditioner, always read the ingredients first to ensure that you’re purchasing a quality product. Avoid products with sulfates and parabens, which can strip away your hair’s natural oils and moisture, and look for products formulated with nourishing hair care oils such as argan oil and coconut oil (Routine Wellness Shampoo and Conditioner are formulated with both argan oil and coconut oil).
EXCESSIVE WASHING
For those who have been washing their hair every day for years, you can keep doing this! Your hair and scalp have become accustomed to the nourishment that comes from daily washing. That said, most people don’t wash their hair everyday, and over-washing your hair can strip it of the necessary oils it needs to be shiny and strong. Try to shampoo every other day if you can, and be sure to use Routine Wellness Conditioner every time you shampoo to ensure that you hydrate and moisturize your hair after cleansing it.
If you find that your hair appears dry after using Routine Wellness, we recommend that you use a bit less shampoo, and rinse it off a bit faster (keep it on for 30 seconds rather than 60 seconds). In addition, we recommend that you apply a bit more conditioner, and keep it on a bit longer (keep it on for about 3 minutes, rather than 90 seconds).
TOO MUCH COLOR/BLEACH
Harsh ingredients commonly found in hair dyes and bleaches can strip your hair of the natural oils it needs to continue looking healthy and shiny. If you color your hair regularly, use gentle shampoos and conditioners like Routine Wellness, which are safe for color-treated hair.
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS
Overexposure to the sun, low humidity, and other environmental factors can all take a toll on your hair. When you’re going to be out in the sun all day, protect your hair with a wide-brimmed hat, which has the added benefit of protecting your skin too. If you swim in the pool or ocean, be sure to take a quick rinse in the shower before you jump into the water to help prevent your strands from soaking up all that chlorinated or salty water.
