Oily roots + dry ends: Here’s How To Deal With Combination Hair

OILY ROOTS + DRY ENDS?
HERE’S WHAT TO DO

Is your hair oily near the roots and scalp, but dry and brittle towards the ends? While you may feel the desire to blame this issue on your genes, the truth is that you are in good company – many people with color-treated hair experience this type of “combination hair” because the bleach strips the hair shaft of its natural oils, which help keep it soft and hydrated.

And while there are a lot of skin care products that are made to treat those with combination skin, there just aren’t that many resources available for the same type of issues in the hair care space.  So what are you to do if you have oily roots but dry ends? Here are 3 great tips:

BRUSH YOUR HAIR FROM ROOT TO TIP

You may have heard of the concept of brushing your hair 100 times every night before bed. This may seem like an old wives’ tale, but there is some truth to the concept.

Brushing your hair from root to tip has numerous benefits for your scalp and can help you alleviate the oily/dry problem you’re having. Along with facilitating hair growth and helping to remove product buildup like dry shampoo, brushing your hair can help distribute natural oils from the scalp down through your hair shaft and ends, naturally hydrating your hair. This can make your hair look shinier and healthier, and can make your hair become more resilient over time.

We recommend you use a boar bristle brush or a hair brush with a ball pointed tip to stimulate and distribute your hair’s natural oils.

WASH YOUR HAIR STRATEGICALLY

Shampoo is made to cleanse your scalp and eliminate any excess oil, sebum, and pollution that might have accumulated on it.

If you’re shampooing your entire head of hair, you may want to reconsider. Next time you start lathering up, apply Routine Shampoo to your roots and try to avoid applying it to your hair from the mid-lengths to the ends. This will ensure you cleanse your scalp of buildup and impurities without stripping away all the oils that will help keep the rest of your hair hydrated and nourished. If you find your roots to be incredibly oily, you may even want to shampoo twice before using conditioner. In addition, you should try to avoid shampoos that contain sulfates or other toxic ingredients, which can strip your hair and make it dryer over time (Routine does not contain sulfates).

On the flip side of this, try to apply Routine Conditioner from the mid shaft of your hair to the ends. Conditioner will renourish and hydrate your hair, and if you already have a scalp that is producing a lot of oil, you likely don’t need to condition your roots. Finally, leave the conditioner in your hair for a bit longer than you customarily have been, and at least 90 seconds.

Along with making your hair look instantly healthier, these tips will actually help transform your hair over time.

USE ROUTINE HAIR SERUM

More oil may not make a bunch of sense if your hair is already getting greasy, but using Routine Hair Serum wisely can add an instant boost of hydration and shine to your hair. A few drops should do the trick to balance your scalp and nourish your hair.
